The Perfect Dessert Shot – Molten Chocolate Bundt Cake

“I’ve never been able to get a good picture of this dessert. Man, that looks amazing! You got the perfect dessert shot!” the owner told me while looking at the back of my camera. 

I knew I got the perfect shot when I saw the expression on her face. She looked like she was about to cry. 

Rewind two weeks before the shoot to my client describing to me on the phone how she wanted to get the perfect shot of her famous Molten Chocolate Bundt Cake. She wanted to be able to share it everywhere with everyone. 

I told her I could definitely get the shot she wants, and we worked together on a list of ideas. After giving me all the details about the cake she wanted to shoot, she gave me the green light and told me to have fun!

The Client’s Vision

The owner said her most famous dessert was the “chocolate indulgence” and asked for a shot that reflected its richness while showing how classy the interior of her restaurant was. The restaurant was dimly lit, with wood paneling and heavy chairs. A perfect backdrop for this dark chocolatey dessert to really pop. The chocolate indulgence is a chocolate bundt cake filled with chocolate ganache, topped with hot fudge, and two scoops of vanilla ice cream with cocoa powder and chocolate shavings dusted on top. It was perfectly in line with the feel of the restaurant. 

Setting up the shot

I always get so excited when I’ve set up the shot. There’s something magical about seeing my client’s vision come to life. You can’t put a price on feeling, y’all.

I used three strobes for this shot. One light directly behind the camera as my fill, one on the side as my key, and another in the back to add a pop of light to the back.

I saw that the bartender was wearing a teal-colored ring, so I asked her if she could grate some chocolate on the ice cream. And voila – it had magical results.

The Final Shot

As soon as I took it, I knew it would sell. I saw the look of excitement on my client’s face and she gave me a high five.

My client texted me the day after I delivered the final shots to thank me for the photoshoot. She said she was so happy with them, and couldn’t wait to show them off. 

I was so happy when I got her text. I knew she would love the final shots.
