Can you imagine a world without tomato soup? It’s no exaggeration to say that it’s an essential element of our culture. Tomato soup is what Ma gives you when you’re sick with the flu, or when it’s a rainy Sunday afternoon and you need a little warming up. And yet, the origins of this most iconic of soups remain shrouded in mystery. One day, if we’re lucky, someone will find out who really invented it—and why—but until then, let’s just enjoy the deliciousness of this simple dish the way it is today: with all of our favorite garnishes.
The idea for this shoot came one day when our owner Mica was sitting outside her favorite cafe enjoying a big giant bowl of hot tomato soup. As she dipped her spoon into the bowl, the idea of creating a fun, fresh, and colorful image popped into her mind. Immediately after she finished her soup, she stopped at her local H-E-B and picked up all the ingredients to make this shoot happen. It was a last-minute, spur-of-the-moment type of portfolio shoot that always results in stunning images.
Mica wanted to create a shot that embodied spring in Austin. She used bright pastel colors, hard shadows, and punchy light to bring out the feeling of freshness. She wanted the image to look like a painting, but with the added texture that only food can provide. She wanted her viewers to imagine themselves at Zilker Park surrounded by bluebonnets, bees buzzing nearby, and the scent of flowers blooming all over
In the realm of soup presentation, garnishes play a crucial role. They can serve as a visual representation of the soup’s origin and ingredients, elevating its aesthetic appeal. For instance, adding cilantro and lime wedges to a Thai curry soup highlights its Asian heritage, while a sprig of parsley complements the classic flavors of French onion soup. Beyond appearance, garnishes also bring a unique texture and flavor to the dish. A sprinkle of croutons on a creamy potato soup, for example, introduces a crunchy texture and a touch of buttery taste. Regardless of the chosen garnish, it serves to enhance the overall sensory experience of the soup.
This last-minute photo shoot was a fantastic experience, and the final image turned out amazing. The atmosphere was lively and filled with creativity as we worked to bring Mica’s vision to life. We had the opportunity to showcase our skills and bring our own unique touch to the shoot. The best part of this shoot was how fast everything came together. Last-minute shoots are the best cause you’re running at full speed with a tank full of creativity. There aren’t any limits on what you can do when you put your creative mind together. In the end, we got this fantastic shot. And now we’re counting down the seconds until we can get back into the studio and continue to do what we do best.
