I had a blast photographing the new line of new knives from Saveur Selects.
Let’s go all the way back to the beginning of the year. Saveur magazine came to me and asked if I wanted to collaborate on a cross-platform campaign with them. I, of course, said yes without thinking twice about it because I have been a big fan of Saveur since I entered the food world in 2015. For this shoot, I wanted to show that these knives weren’t just like any other knives but were beautiful tools meant to be used and appreciated. The collection includes a paring knife, a Santoku knife, and a serrated utility knife. In my images, I wanted to highlight the beauty of these knives and the versatility they offer.
I wanted the filet mignon to have an elegant and soft feel. So I photographed the filet mignon raw with herbs and spices. I used my strobe with a large diffuser for soft light. The beauty of this photograph is in the details of the marbling and texture of the meat, so I chose to focus on that as well as its shape.
I wanted to create a hearty, warm, and homely feel to the pie image. So I created a shot that showed the preparation of an apple pie. You can see the chopped-up apples, the syrup, and the flour dust.
I started out by creating a “mise en place” shot of all the ingredients used to make the pie.
The whole idea behind this piece was that it should look like something you would see at home, preparing food with your family. I wanted it to be warm and inviting and have a feeling of abundance—like you’re cooking and enjoying food with your family and friends.

As a food photographer, I’m always looking for new ways to approach my subjects. With food, you want to make it look delicious, but you also want to make it feel alive. In particular, with a vegetable, the goal is to capture it in the most vibrant way possible. I tried to capture the energy and vibrancy of cooking, and especially the act of cutting, which I love to do.
So if you are in the market for some new knives, I encourage you to look into Saveur’s new line and their beautiful work. I am definitely not a knife expert, but these seem to be well made and have been my go-to in my kitchen since I received them. I am thrilled to have these knives in my collection. A clean, simple, and classic design is perfect for everyone but especially for the professional chef.
