It’s not often that you get to share in the magic of a moment, but this is one of those times.

I was chatting with Kristina from Girl Gone Grits Food Styling by way of email—we were talking about possible collaborations and how we could work together. I had an idea for something glittery, fun, and delicious that I wanted to try out, so I emailed her the idea and asked if she was up for it. She emailed me back in May and said she wanted to play with glitter! And here we are… we went down the glittery secret wormhole.

Meet The Team

Kristina Wolter is a food stylist based in Austin, TX. She’s been a food stylist for over 16 years, and she’s made a name for herself by working with some of the biggest names in the business. I met Kristina back in early 2020 when I reached out to her about shooting some portfolio photos for my website. After our first photoshoot, we instantly clicked! Since then, we’ve worked together on countless shoots and have become friends. Her years of experience and expertise have been invaluable, and she’s been an amazing friend and mentor to me.

Jill Stein is Kristina’s assistant. Jill lives in Austin with her husband and kids—and she’s also an incredible food stylist! She has been coming into her own as a food stylist for a few years now, and I look forward to working with her on future projects.

Research and planning

It all started one night as I was scrolling through my Instagram feed when I saw a picture of a glitter-covered pizza. My jaw dropped.

I went down a glitter wormhole of similar images, and before I knew it, I had spent an hour staring at glittery things—my head spinning with ideas. I fell down the glitter wormhole, and I am not sorry.

Kristina and I spent the next few weeks researching shot ideas and searching for the perfect props. We found the most perfect ones—glitter-covered eggs, chocolate bars, donuts, cupcakes…

Staging our shoot for our glittery secrets

When we were getting ready to shoot our product shots, we knew that the mood of the photo was going to be important. We wanted to create a feeling of delight and surprise. To do this, we started by setting up our props and lighting to create the mood we wanted to evoke—which also meant changing the way we used our props.

Kristina created the perfect “bite shot” and painted glitter inside so that it looked like when you bite into it, there’s a burst of glittery goodness that gets all over your face.

It takes a whole lot of work to get amazing shots like these.

When you’re shooting collaboration projects, there are many factors that come into play. This is the perfect time to learn how to use your equipment and customize it for the shots you want. You need to plan out your shots beforehand, so everyone knows what they’re doing and where they should be standing. And, of course, you have to work with your team.
